THIRTEEN

Felix went from window to window, watching as the monster circled the building, sniffing and pawing the logs. Every now and then it raised itself on its hind legs and peered into the second story windows. It had stopped using its head as a battering ram, but each time it touched the wall, Felix could feel the whole tower shudder.

The monster was getting noisier, too, its bellows and cries like a weird form of speech. The sounds made Felix feel almost as frightened as the actual attacks on the tower. Without a moment of quiet, he couldn’t even think. What were they going to do?

“I don’t understand,” said Felix. “Why can’t you make him go away?”

“I don’t know,” said the Other Felix. “I always could before.”

“Before what?”

“Before you came.”

“You can’t fight the monster because of me?”

“Things are changing now that you’re here.”

“I thought things were getting better.”

“I thought so, too,” said the Other Felix.

After a long time the monster grew quiet. Felix wondered if it was listening. He listened, too. Then he heard, from far away in the forest, a trumpeting call.

Another monster was answering.

The monster at the foot of the tower grunted. It sounded pleased.

“Oh, no,” said the Other Felix.
